WiFi Extenders vs. Wireless Access Points: Which do you need?

Choosing the right device depends on your existing infrastructure and performance needs:

  • WiFi Range Extenders (Repeaters/Boosters): Perfect for homes and small offices without existing cabling. These devices wirelessly connect to your router and "repeat" the signal to cover hard-to-reach areas. They are a cost-effective plug-and-play solution for fixing blackspots instantly.

  • Wireless Access Points (WAPs): The professional choice for businesses and high-performance networks. WAPs connect directly to your network via an Ethernet cable (often using Power over Ethernet - PoE), creating a robust, high-speed wireless network that doesn't suffer from the speed loss often associated with wireless repeaters.

Next-Generation Speed with WiFi 6 Future-proof your network with our selection of WiFi 6 (802.11ax) Access Points. Designed to handle high-density environments, these devices offer faster throughput and better efficiency for networks with many connected devices—ideal for busy offices, hotels, and schools.

Outdoor and Long-Range Solutions Take your connectivity outside with weatherproof Outdoor Wireless Access Points. ideal for covering car parks, campuses, or outdoor seating areas, ensuring your staff and guests stay connected wherever they are.

How WiFi extenders work

A WiFi extender connects to your existing WiFi and then boosts the signal from that location.  They are super simple to set-up and require no existing network cabling, you can simply connect your extender wirelessly to your router which creates an Wi-Fi network with the same name (SSID) as your existing network.  Your users will use the same username and password as your existing WiFI to logon.

Extenders are ideal for houses and small businesses.

Pros

  • Wifi Extenders are easy to set-up
  • Wifi extenders are affordable

Cons

  • You may notice some network speed loss at range when connected to the extender's wifi signal.
  • WiFi extenders can create dead zones where the WiFI signal from your router and the signal from your extender overlap each other.

How Access Points work

Access points work by creating a unique Wi-Fi network separate from your main wi-fi network with its own SSID and login credentials that is connected to your main network via an ethernet cable. They are a little more tricky to set-up than WiFi extenders and they do need exsiting cabling, but they are more reliable, stable and there's no loss of speed as you are extending the range of your wi-fi network parially via cabling.

Extenders are useful for large houses maybe an outhouse, cabin or separate garage that needs wifi or businesses, offices and hotels where existing cabling is available and higher performance is needed.

Pros

  • Maintin the same wifi network speed as your main router
  • Stable reliable conenctions
  • Can handle more devices

Cons

  • Require a wired connection to the router
  • More complexity requires more technical knowledge to set-up
  • Can be more expensive that WiFi Extenders
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a WiFi Extender and an Access Point?

A WiFi Extender (or booster) wirelessly picks up the signal from your router and rebroadcasts it. It is easy to install but can reduce network speed. An Access Point connects to your router via a wired Ethernet cable and creates a new, powerful wireless signal. Access points are generally faster and more stable, making them better for businesses.

Do I need a power socket for a Wireless Access Point?

Not always. Many professional Access Points, such as those from Grandstream and Cisco, support Power over Ethernet (PoE). This allows both data and electricity to travel down a single Ethernet cable, making installation easy on ceilings or walls where standard plug sockets aren't available.

Can I use these devices to get WiFi in my garden or outbuilding?

Yes. For the best results, we recommend using an Outdoor Access Point. These are weatherproof and designed to withstand rain and temperature changes. If you cannot run a cable to the outside area, a high-quality WiFi Range Extender placed near a window facing the garden can also help boost the signal outdoors.

What is a Mesh WiFi system?

A Mesh WiFi system uses multiple units placed around a building that work together intelligently to create a single, seamless network. Unlike traditional extenders, Mesh systems (like the TP-Link Deco or Omada series) allow you to walk from room to room without your device disconnecting or losing speed.

Will a WiFi Extender work with my existing router?

Yes, the vast majority of WiFi Extenders and Repeaters are "universal," meaning they will work with any standard router from any Internet Service Provider (ISP).
