A two-way radio repeater is an automated transceiver that receives a weak transmission on one frequency and simultaneously re-transmits it at higher power (typically 25W to 50W) on another frequency via an elevated antenna. This overcomes physical obstacles such as steel structures, concrete basements, hills, and dense foliage.
Modern Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) Tier II repeaters use 2-slot TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) technology. This enables two independent voice or data conversations simultaneously on a single licensed 12.5kHz channel, doubling system capacity without requiring additional Ofcom spectrum fees.
A cavity duplexer allows the repeater to transmit and receive concurrently through a single antenna without self-interference. For maximum range, pairing the repeater with a low-loss coaxial cable (e.g. RG-213 or LMR-400) and a high-gain omnidirectional collinear antenna is critical.
Because repeaters operate at higher transmit power and use split frequencies, they require a valid UK Ofcom Business Radio License (such as a Technically Assigned or Area Defined license). At PMC Telecom, our technical specialists can assist you with frequency coordination, Ofcom application support, and pre-programmed plug-and-play setup.
