The Hytera VM685 is a body-worn camera with a built-in radio speaker microphone, available with 16GB, 32GB, 64GB or 128GB of internal memory. It records 1080p video at 60 frames per second and runs for more than 8 hours on one charge, for security officers, door supervisors, enforcement staff and other front-line teams.

Hytera refers to the VM685 as a remote video microphone (RVM). Clipped to the uniform, it records video, sound and photos, and when it is connected to a compatible Hytera two-way radio it also acts as the radio's microphone and speaker.

Choosing your Memory Size

Every version of the VM685 has the same camera, battery, screen and build. The only difference is how much footage it can hold. The memory is built in and there is no memory card slot, so it is worth picking the size that matches how long your staff record and how often cameras are downloaded.

Memory HD (1080p) Standard quality Best suited to
16GB Approx. 2h 50 mins Approx. 5h 18 mins Recording incidents only, downloaded after each shift
32GB Approx. 5h 40 mins Approx. 10h 36 mins A full shift at standard quality
64GB Approx. 11h 20 mins Approx. 21h 12 mins A full shift in HD
128GB Approx. 22h 40 mins Approx. 42h 24 mins Several shifts between downloads, or shared cameras

On one charge, the VM685 battery records for more than 8 hours. For staff who record in HD for the whole of that time, 64GB is the smallest memory size with enough space. Where recording only starts when an incident begins, the 16GB or 32GB versions normally have plenty of room.

How the Camera Works with Hytera Radios

Officers who carry a two-way radio usually wear a separate speaker microphone on their chest, so they can talk without taking the radio off their belt. The VM685 can replace it. Once it is connected to a compatible Hytera radio by cable, the wearer presses the push-to-talk (PTT) key on the camera to speak, and incoming calls play through its 2W speaker.

This keeps the uniform down to one device for video and radio. The VM685 also works as a standalone body camera for teams that do not use Hytera radios.

Picture, Sound and Photo Quality

The 16 megapixel sensor records MP4 video at VGA, 720p or 1080p, at 30 or 60 frames per second. Lower settings use less memory, so they stretch the recording time on any of the four sizes.

The fixed-focus, all-glass lens has a 140° diagonal field of view (106° horizontal, 78° vertical) and focuses from 0.1m to infinity. Because the lens rotates through 180°, it can be pointed forward whichever way the camera is clipped on.

Sound is picked up by a silicone microphone and an electret microphone and saved in AAC format. Photos are taken at 16, 5 or 3 megapixels and saved as JPG files.

Durability and Working Conditions

The VM685 is sealed to IP67 against dust and water, certified to MIL-STD-810G and rated to survive a 2m drop with the clip fitted. It works from -20°C to +60°C, can be stored from -40°C to +85°C, and has electrostatic discharge protection rated to 6kV by contact and 12kV through the air.

Evidence security and file transfer
Footage on the VM685 is encrypted with 256-bit AES. Only administrators can reach the files, using a 6-digit PIN on the camera or a password to transfer recordings to a PC.

Recordings download over micro USB to a PC running Windows XP, 7, 8 or 10, or automatically when the camera is placed in the Hytera MCA22 docking station. Hytera SmartMDM software, sold separately, is used to manage and share the footage.

Who uses the Hytera VM685

The VM685 is built for staff who deal with the public face to face, where a video record helps settle complaints and protects the wearer.

Security Body Camera for Patrol and Door Supervision

Security guards, mobile patrol officers and door supervisors often carry Hytera radios already. The VM685 gives them recording and radio from one unit, with infrared night vision for car parks, venue doors and poorly lit streets.

Councils, Transport and Healthcare

Civil enforcement officers, neighbourhood wardens, transport staff and hospital security teams use body cameras to record disputes. The choice of memory sizes lets each organisation match the camera to its shift lengths and download routine.

Compatible Radios, PCs and Accessories

Hytera lists its Multi-mode Advanced Radio and selected narrowband radios as compatible with the VM685. The radio connection cable is sold separately.

Footage downloads to Windows XP, 7, 8 and 10 PCs. The Hytera MCA22 six-way docking station, also sold separately, charges up to six VM685 or VM550 cameras and downloads their footage while they are docked.

Customer Questions
Which VM685 memory size should I choose?

>Choose by how long your staff record and how often cameras are downloaded. 16GB suits incident-only recording, 32GB covers a shift at standard quality, 64GB covers a shift in HD, and 128GB holds several shifts between downloads.

Can the VM685 memory be upgraded later?

No, the memory is built into the camera and there is no memory card slot, so storage cannot be added or swapped after purchase. The size you order is the size the camera keeps for its whole working life. If you are unsure, choose a larger size: 64GB holds a full shift of HD recording, and 128GB holds several shifts between downloads. Once footage has been downloaded to a PC or through the Hytera MCA22 docking station, the space on the camera can be used again.

Does the VM685 need a Hytera radio to work?

No, it works as a standalone body camera. A compatible Hytera radio and connection cable are only needed to use it as a radio speaker microphone.

Is footage on the VM685 secure?

Yes, recordings are encrypted with 256-bit AES. Access needs a 6-digit PIN on the camera or a password for PC transfer.

How long does the battery last on the VM685?

The 2500mAh battery records for more than 8 hours on one charge, whichever memory size you choose. It recharges in under 4 hours.
