The Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise 8254 is a hard-wearing DECT handset for Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise phone systems, available here new or refurbished. It is designed for healthcare, retail and hospitality, where phones get dropped, splashed and wiped down several times a day. It weighs 132 g and gives up to 20 hours of talk time on one charge.

How the 8254 works with your Alcatel-Lucent System

Each 8254 registers to the ALE DECT base stations on your site, which connect to your Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise call server. TDM and IP base stations are both supported, and the 8254 can sit alongside the ALE DECT handsets you already use. The handset needs an Alcatel-Lucent system to work and cannot be used on its own.

Through Alcatel-Lucent's AGAP protocol, staff can look up colleagues in the system directory, check their last 50 calls and link the handset to their desk phone. One handset can hold registrations for four separate systems.

Toughness and Water Resistance

The IP65 rating means dust cannot get inside and the handset can withstand water jets. In Alcatel-Lucent's tests, it was dropped onto concrete twelve times from as high as 2 m, then a further 1,000 times from half a metre. Rubber panels on the casing give a secure hold, even in gloved hands.

Infection Control and Cleaning

The casing plastics, rubber parts, lens coating, clip grip and keypad all carry an antibacterial treatment that reduced bacteria by 99.9% in ISO 22196 testing. With no gaps between the keys, the keypad is easy to wipe clean. Alcatel-Lucent has confirmed the handset withstands chlorhexidine, 99% isopropyl alcohol, methylated ethanol, dilute hydrochloric acid and neat dishwasher detergent.

Staff Safety - Alarm Key and Location

A dedicated alarm key places an alarm call when it is held down or pressed repeatedly, and a password can be required before anyone acknowledges the alarm. Where an external location server is installed, the system works out where the handset is by triangulating between as many as four base stations. That location is then sent with notification messages.

Using the Handset Day to Day

The 1.8-inch colour screen and keypad are both backlit, so the 8254 is easy to read in dim corridors and stockrooms. A three-colour LED on the front shows battery level, missed calls and new messages at a glance. Calls can be taken on the speakerphone or through a wired headset in the 3.5 mm jack, and Automatic Gain Control evens out the call volume.

Users can pick from six ringtones, switch to vibrate or use meeting mode. The menus are available in 13 languages, including English.

Battery Life and Charging

Expect up to 20 hours of calls or 200 hours on standby. The 1,100 mAh lithium-ion pack is easy to swap and recharges in under three hours. Chargers are not supplied. The 8254 fits the Alcatel-Lucent 82x4 single or dual desktop charger, which needs its own power supply.

Where the Alcatel-Lucent 8254 is Used

  • Wards and Clinics - Nurses and care staff can wipe the handset down between patients with the disinfectants they already use
  • Supermarkets and Stores - Shop floor teams carry a handset that copes with drops onto hard floors and dusty stockrooms
  • Hotels and Leisure Sites - Housekeeping, kitchen and pool staff stay contactable in wet and busy areas
  • Security and Night Staff - Employees working alone can call for assistance with the alarm key, and be located through the base stations

What Else is Needed

  • Alcatel-Lucent Phone System - An Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise call server, with ALE DECT base stations (TDM or IP) covering your site
  • Desktop Charger - The 82x4 desktop charger (3BN67371AA) or dual desktop charger (3BN67372AA), sold separately
  • Charger Power Supply - The Alcatel-Lucent 82xx desktop charger power supply, sold separately
  • Location Server (Optional) - An external server is needed for handset location

Customer Questions
What is the difference between the new and refurbished 8254?

Both are the same Alcatel-Lucent 8254 handset, part number 3BN67370AA, with identical specifications and features. A new handset has never been used. A refurbished handset has been used before, then fully cleaned and tested before sale, so it works just as well as a new one at a lower price. Either option registers to your ALE base stations and connects to your Alcatel-Lucent system in exactly the same way. New suits a full rollout where you want every handset unused. Refurbished is a cost-effective way to add handsets to an existing system or replace lost or damaged ones.

Which charger fits the Alcatel-Lucent 8254?

The Alcatel-Lucent 82x4 desktop charger, in single or dual versions. It needs the 82xx desktop charger power supply, which is sold separately.

Is the 8254 waterproof?

It is water and dust resistant to IP65, which protects it against water jets and splashes. It is not rated for being submerged in water.

How long does the 8254 battery last?

Up to 20 hours of talk time or 200 hours on standby from a full charge. Recharging takes less than three hours.

How does the 8254 alarm key work?

Holding the alarm key down, or pressing it several times, sends an alarm call through your Alcatel-Lucent system. A password can be set so that only authorised staff can acknowledge the alarm.
