Union Jack Retro Telephone
Feb 3rd
Something rather special landed on our desk here at PMC Towers very recently. This rather funky looking Union Jack telephone from GPO. We think it’s great!
With the London 2012 Olympics landing in the UK on the same year as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, GPO have picked a great time to launch this telephone.
With classic styling, yet modern featured, this phone is perfect for people wanting to add a touch of Great Britain into their house.
The phone works on any standard analogue line and features pulse and tone dialling so it’s compatible with telephone banking etc. Push buttons mean that convenience is king (Do I get points for shoehorning another royal reference in here?) – you can also turn off the electronic ringer if needed, the phone features rubber feet so it won’t slip off, or scratch your furniture.
The phone itself has a high quality finish and just feels like the classic phones it is so obviously based on.
We think you guys are going to love these, in fact, they’re already selling really well – you can buy them from the PMC Telecom Website here.
Gigaset L410 Portable DECT Handsfree Speaker
Dec 1st
We’ve just taken delivery of these handy little gizmos from Gigaset and couldn’t resist giving one a try. If you have a DECT cordless phone and need to work, or chat hands free, but don’t like the thought of wearing a headset all day, then this little gadget could be perfect for you.
After unboxing the Gigaset L410, it took us a few moments to connect the battery and then pair the unit with our phone – we even used a Panasonic to see if the unit would be happy with a non-Gigaset phone and it worked perfectly!
We made a call, pressed the button and got a consistently clear sound from the unit and with the microphone being placed close to the user’s face, as opposed to using a regular speaker phone which could be some distance away, the other caller could hear us perfectly.
We’d definitely recommend these for people who do a lot of chatting on their cordless phones but need to keep their hands free.

What is PMR446?
PMR 446 (Private Mobile Radio) is a licence free radio frequency that operates on the 446Mhz frequency and is open for use without licence throughout the UK and most of Europe.
For a list of European countries which support the PMR446 frequency as a licence free frequency, click here.
How many channels are there?
Most PMR Radios come with 8 Channels and 38 sub channels on each of those initial channels, giving a possible combination of over 300 channels, so you’ll always have a clear channel you and your colleagues can use.
Compatability
As long as your radios are PMR446 you can use any brand of radio to talk to another radio. You could take the cheapest radio available and, so long as it’s on the same channel, it will communicate perfectly with the most expensive PMR two way radio on the market (as long as the expensive radio isn’t using any additional optional encryption that is often available on the higher end radios).
Range
It is impossible to give an exact figure on the exact range you will get in any given situation, however, most PMR 446 radios operate at about the same power and will give you a similar sort of range throughout, but as a general guide you can expect you get up to about 10km maximum out in the open country (line of sight) down to a few hundred metres in built up areas.
I was actually using some cobra sports and leisure two way radios in the lake district earlier this year, and at the top of the Langdale Horseshoe I could speak to and hear clearly other radio users who were on Windemere, boating – a quick measure on Google maps puts this at a distance of 11km – Michael.
Radios
There are a wide range of PMR446 radios available for home and business consumers:
- Very basic radios ideal for kids start at about £20
- Mid Range Sports and Leisure radios, ideal for skiing, mountain biking, camping etc range from £50 to £90
- Commercial grade PMR446 radios are much, much tougher than other radios and are perfect for more day-to-day use by businesses and professionals on building sites, security work, boat yards, farms etc – prices range from £100 – £300.
N.B Commercial grade radios are sold as individual radios whereas kids and Sports & Leisure radios come in pairs – please check the image illustration for confirmation.
Where can I buy the best and cheapest PMR 446 Two Way Radios?
At PMC Telecom we stock a wide range of Two Way Radios from sports and leisure up to the top-of-the-range commercial grade radios radios on the market, as well as headsets and a whole range of other two-way-radio accessories. Check out our website to see what we have on offer.

Long Range Cordless Phones
Oct 11th
We get asked for phones that work over a long range an awful lot, so we though it would be a good idea to create a category on our site that would reflect your requests.
http://www.pmctelecom.co.uk/categories/long-range-cordless-phones/220
Long range cordless phones are ideal for people with larger houses, outhouses, businesses, building sites, garages, farms, kennels, garden centres etc etc.
We have tried to add a diverse range of long range cordless phones to start with as to achieve extra range, they work in a number of different ways. So far, our range includes:
BT Elements

The BT Elements are a DECT based phone with a claimed 1km range out of the box – with experience we’ve found these phones to have a better than standard range DECT phones straight out of the box, without the need for a repeater or range extender. In tests we didn’t quite manage a kilometre outdoors, but with line of site between the base unit and the handset, the range is pretty respectable.
Indoors the handsets perform admirably, again, outperforming standard DECT phones and penetrating thick walls with ease and giving slightly better range than standard DECT phones.
A good thing to note about the BT Elements is that they come with a location free base unit, meaning the base is separate from the main handset so you are free to place the base unit somewhere you will get better range (usually up high, or near a window – wherever you will get best line of sight between base and handsets) – this gives you that slight extra bit of freedom when choosing where to place your base as you don’t have the main handset and charger integrated as part of the unit.
The BT Elements handsets are designed as a ruggedised handset, to IP54 standards and are splash and dust proof meaning that they are ideal for situations where handsets may get dropped such as garages, kennels, garden centres, workshops etc.
Advantages
- Great range out of the box
- Great pricing
- Ruggedised handset design, to IP54 Standard
- Handy torch on the handsets
- Location free base unit place the base to give best reception
Disadvantages
- No answering machine
- Not Repeater compatible (to further extend the range)
- Not quite the 1km range as suggested, but great all the same
In stock at PMC Telecom from £54.90 – Click here for more information.
Panasonic KX-TG6481 – 6 (Single to Four handsets available) and RTX4002 Repeater Bundle Packs
The Panasonic KX-TG6481 DECT Cordless phones are a solid, reliable cordless phone straight out of the box, giving approximately 50-80 meters indoors and up to 200 meters in more open situations. Adding an RTX4002 Repeater (as per our bundle offers linked) effectively doubles this range and makes an extremely versatile solution for people needing extra range in a specific location as depending on where you place the repeater gives you extra range around that location.
For more information on how repeaters work, check our blog posting by clicking here.
These Panasonic KX-TG6481 handsets are designed to be shockproof and are built to IP54 standards meaning that they are resistant to dust and water splashes, making them an ideal handset for outdoor use, in garages, building sites, garden centres etc.
Advantages
- Panasonic brand phones have always proven to be reliable
- Extremely reliable signal strength
- Digital answering machine
- Repeater placement means you can chose which direction you need the extra range
- Add more than one repeater to further extend range in another direction
- GAP Compatible (extra handsets are easily added to the system)
- Ruggedised handset design, to IP54 Standard
Disadvantages
- Repeaters register to the main base unit effectively as an additional handset, taking away -1 handset capacity for every extra repeater registered
- Repeater registration can be slightly tricky for those who aren’t tech savvy although we have tried to make this easier with a step-by-step guide – click here to download as a PDF.
In stock at PMC Telecom from £112.42 – Click here for more information.
Engenius EP801 Super long range Cordless Phones
The Engenius Cordless Phones are designed as a high end office/site phone for use in areas where long range cordless telephone communications are absolutely essential. Using the 863~865MHz radio band gives these phones the same sort of range you’d expect with two-way radios with much better quality, and unlike its DECT counterparts (where you can only add six handsets) you can actually add up to nine cordless handsets to one base unit on the EP801 system!
Advantages
- Stupendous range straight out of the box (Genuine 1km line of sight)
- Plug and play
- Vibrate only ring facility (rare feature on cordless phones)
Disadvantages
- An expensive option for the home user
- No answering machine
- Doesn’t use DECT (digital technology) so is not compatible with anything else on the market
In stock at PMC Telecom from £389 – Click here for more information
We hope you like our range of Long Range Cordless Phones here… we’re planning on putting together some more bundle packages with various other DECT phones and repeaters so keep your eyes open for those!

PMC Telecom – Independently rated and reviewed by our customers
Sep 3rd
It’s always a worry when buying online, just who you can trust with your business. Who will deliver on time, who has stock of your goods and who will treat you like a person, rather than a number on a database.
TrustPilot & Google Checkout
After each purchase* we encourage customers to give us feedback on our service on an independent reviews site called Trust Pilot, whilst customers who purchase using the Google Checkout option are always given the choice to leave Feedback through Google’s mandatory feedback system (these are also linked to on TrustPilot).
Some sample reviews:
BT CONVERSE 2200/PLANTRONICS 101A H/SET
This company deserves a medal for its help, paperwork and next day delivery. The items were perfect in every way! It is my first experience but definitely not my last. I highly recommend them and look forward to my next purchase. Good luck PMC
A top class company, highly efficient and a real pleasure, thank you.
Outstanding service
Very helpful service, ordered on Friday afternoon and the phones arrived on time on Monday, after I got an email giving a 1 hr delivery time slot. It’s just a shame other companies don’t give such a good service. This is the second time I’ve ordered from them and they are highly recommended.
Super service from start to finish
Previous discussions over a period of time with the Company about my selection had been extremely friendly and helpful and so I ordered a set of 3 Motorola DECT phones which seemed to arrive almost before I’d clicked “Pay Now” which was impressive compared to other sites. A whole year later one of the set became faulty – not PMC’s fault – and without any hesitation they were happy to replace it for me. The replacement was despatched back to me the same day they received my faulty unit. Absolutely great service. Many thanks, I’m glad I chose PMC Telecom.
I think it’s well worth boasting a little bit when you receive such consistent good reviews, however the serious note is that these are all from genuine customers who have been happy with our service (you can find them all on our TrustPilot page) – it’s always worth knowing who you can trust with your business, so we think it’s only fair to pass on our customer’s comments to future customers so they’re aware of the kind of service they’ll expect from us. :o)
PMC Telecom on Ebay
At PMC Telecom we also run an ebay shop which allows us to sell some of our cheaper items and seconds at bargain prices, and so far after 842 reviews we have a 100% feedback rating, with five star ratings on our “Item Description”, “Communication”, “Despatch Time” and “Postage and Packing cost” ratings. We are also rated as one of ebay’s “Top Rated Sellers”.
As you can see, we are proud to receive a high level of positive feedback and would like to continue providing top level service to existing and future customers alike!
A note about leaving reviews
*We always endeavour to make each and every purchase as smooth and as stress free as possible; aiming to deliver goods within two working days of purchase. Of course, when you’re dealing with huge amounts of orders every day, things can occasionally go wrong, and whilst these are never intentional we always ask that customers contact us as soon as possible so that we can attempt to fix any issues you may have before you leave any reviews on independent sites, as usually a missed delivery, a faulty item or a simple technical question can be dealt with quite quickly.
How do DECT Repeaters/Range Extenders work?
Aug 26th
DECT Repeaters are a marvellous addition to any DECT cordless phone system, adding additional range to your existing Cordless Phone set-up. If you have a particularly large house or need the phones to reach out to the bottom of the garden to a workshop, DECT repeaters help you to attain that extra range without any need for additional wiring.
How repeaters work is quite often a mystery to people enquiring about how to add a range extender to their system. In this post I’ll try to explain how a repeater works and how you go about installing it to your existing DECT cordless phone system.
Limitations
First of all, it’s worth pointing out that not all Cordless DECT Phones are compatible with DECT repeaters – an easy way to tell if your phone is compatible is to check the set-up menu on your handset, and if you can find a “Repeater mode” option somewhere in there, it’s safe to say that your system is repeater compatible. If in doubt, check your user guide. Generally speaking we have found the following brands to be repeater compatible:
- Panasonic (all ranges – KX-TG) – Work well with the Panasonic KX-TGA272 repeater, the RTX 4002 and RTX4002 Pro Repeaters
- Siemens Gigaset (All ranges – Gigaset) – Only work with the BT Diverse Repeater (made by Siemens)
- BT (Diverse range only) – Only work with the BT Diverse Repeater
Please note that this isn’t a definitive list and you should always check with your manufacturer if you are at all unsure.
A repeater will register to your base unit in a similar manner as an additional handset on the system.
Standard repeaters can only be installed once in any given direction; for example, if your base unit is in a central location, you can put a repeater to the North, South, East and/or West of your base to extend the range, you can’t however, put a repeater to the North, then another one to the North of that, effectively “daisy-chaining” the repeaters together.
Note: The RTX4002 Pro Link repeater can be daisy chained, but for the sake of clarity and simplicity I’ve decided to keep this blog post to standard repeaters.
How do they work?
Your existing base unit will essentially be transmitting and receiving radio signals to and from the cordless handsets and in any environment the signal can become weaker depending on various conditions; thick walls, electrical interference, insulation etc. Wherever you place your base unit, it will have an area of effectiveness, but when you get to the edge of this area your signal will begin to break up and you’ll eventually lose connection with your cordless phone if you venture further. A DECT repeater works by receiving and transmitting the signal from the existing base unit out from this point (where your existing unit is at its signal limit).
The following images illustrate how this works – click to enlarge them.
How to install your DECT Repeater
To install your repeater you’ll need to register it your original base unit (effectively as an additional handset on the system)
You’ll need to be near your phone’s base unit with the repeater in hand whilst you go through the process – once complete, you can simply unplug, then relocate the repeater to a suitable location. The beauty of repeaters is that you can locate them almost anywhere indoors to give you the best range possible – usually somewhere high that has a good field of view of the area to be covered is best, but this is not always necessary.
Step-by-step – N.B This is a guide in a nutshell, you should consult both your repeater’s and your cordless phone’s user guide for more information.
- Put your phone’s base unit into registration mode – usually by pressing and holding the “page” or “find” button for 3-5 seconds. There is more info on this on our register handset posting, here.
- Plug in your DECT repeater, or plug in the unit and then press and hold the registration button on the unit to put the unit into registration mode. Most repeaters have some sort of indicator light to let you know what mode it’s in – please check the your user guide for more info.
- Once both units are in registration mode it shouldn’t be long until the two register together. Some sort of confirmation flash or indication should show on the repeater to indicate that this has been done.
- Unplug the repeater and go to the area approximately where your handset signal is breaking up, then plug in the repeater.
- On your cordless phone handsets you will usually have to activate “Repeater Mode”. Browse the handset’s menu, and you should find this setting in the Set-up > Handset Set-up menu. If you’re having problems finding this, please consult your user guide.
- All done!
- Try a test call outside of the range of your existing base unit’s range (somewhere near your repeater), you should have a perfectly clear signal. You should be able to walk even further away and test how much range your new repeater has given you!
Please note that this is a very general guide and some repeaters and DECT systems differ slightly, but the above is a good approximation of the repeater registration procedure. If you at all unsure of any steps, please check with your user guide or your manufacturer’s help page.

CoolTalk Extreme Throat Mics
Aug 25th

Cooltalk Extreme
When we got the CoolTalk Extreme throat mics in stock we thought it might be fun to do some testing around our office block to see what the clarity is like. We tested them with Motorola TLKR-T7 Two Way Radios.
Obviously in a office block it’s going to be hard to test these in extreme conditions, however we found them to be very clear and performed brilliantly allowing us to hear exactly what the other person was saying all the time – we did send our office junior out across the road to the top of a windy multi-storey car park and couldn’t hear a peep of wind noise; with the microphone fitting snugly against the throat this eliminates virtually all background noise so all you hear is the person speaking.
In the box you get the throat mic and earpiece, a detachable push-to-talk lead with a velcro strap to help connect the PTT button to your ski-poles, handlebars or whatever, and an instruction leaflet.
We can happily recommend these superb, low-cost headsets for those of you who need to use two-way radios or walkie-talkies, but also need to keep your hands free to ski or climb etc.
Overall, we’d say that the CoolTalks are perfect for things like mountain biking, climbing, skiing etc; but there are tougher, more rugged throat mics on the market if you’re looking for heavy use such as military simulations or training etc.
The CoolTalk Extreme Throat Mics are available for both Doro and Motorola (single-pin) Two-Way radios on the PMC Telecom website today, and are priced at a cost of £29.99 click here for more information.

How do I register my DECT cordless phone handset?
Aug 24th

The registration option on a Panasonic handset
It’s safe to say that the process of registering a Cordless Phone handset is similar no matter which brand or model of cordless phone you have. They all follow a similar procedure although they may differ slightly depending on the handset settings. In this post I’ll run you through the procedure so you’ll at least have an idea of what to look for.
In essence you’ll be putting both your base unit, (the main box that is plugged into your telephone socket), and your unregistered handset into registration mode at the same time so they’ll effectively be “looking” for each other to make the connection.
Before we start, you’ll need to familiarise yourself
with a few things
Finding the “Find” Button on the Base unit.
On your base unit, you’ll need to look for the “Find” button – this is the button you’d press if you lost your handsets. When you press this once it should ring all of your registered handsets. Some manufacturers label this as “Page” or “Find”. Panasonic usually have a little logo of a circle with three semi circles (like a speaker).
Familiarise yourself with your handset’s menu system.
Every DECT handset should have some way of navigating its menu system – this usually compromises of phonebook entries, last numbers called, answering machine messages and, almost always, a set-up menu. If you go into the set-up menu you should find a “Register Handset” option. This is what you’re looking for.
Step-by-step
- To put the base unit into registration mode you’ll need to press and hold the “find” Button for approximately 3-5 seconds. Depending on the system you should hear an audible beep to say that the base is in registration mode, it’ll be a continuous beeping or flashing indicator, some systems give you no indication at all (you can still try the next step if this is the case – it’s the best way to find out).
- Once the base unit is in registration mode, you’ll need to browse your handset’s menus and find the register handset option. Click that.
- Your handset should now briefly display something along the lines of a “searching…” message.
- The next step is usually a pin code. The default pin code on 99.9% of Cordless DECT phones is 0000. If you haven’t ever changed your base pin code, enter 0000 at this stage and confirm.
- With any luck you should get some sort of confirmation that your handset has been registered – an audible beep, or flash, or a message on the handset. The best way to test if the handset has registered is to simply try and make a call on the handset. If you get a dialling tone, the handset has been registered.
Simple! :o)
**Update** If you’re a Siemens Gigaset user – Siemens have a website here which gives exact instructions on each of thir handsets: http://gigaset.com/uk/en/cms/PageCustomerServicesRegisterHandset.html

What does GAP mean?
Aug 20th
GAP Compatibility is essentially an agreement between the different phone manufacturers to make their DECT cordless handsets work with one an other.
For example: You have a GAP Compatible BT Diverse system which is nearly 10 years old, but one of your handsets has been dropped and won’t work any more – you like your BT Diverse and don’t want to replace the whole system, but the same handsets aren’t available any more. With GAP you could purchase any additional GAP compatible handset regardless of the manufacturer (Panasonic, Siemens, BT etc) and register it to your existing BT Diverse system. Saving you the cost and hassle of replacing all of your phones.
Things to note: Gap Compatibility ensures that the handset will register to your existing base unit and will make and receive calls – other functions such as call transfer, caller ID, phonebook transfer etc are not guaranteed to work due to software on different handsets and manufacturers being different. Due to the thousands of possible combinations of handsets available, this is not something anyone could advise on without testing the exact units together, however it is more likely that like-for-like manufacturer handsets will allow these features to work.
PMC Telecom stock a wide range of GAP Compatible additional cordless handsets on our website here.
What does DECT mean?
Aug 20th
DECT is an acronym that stands for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications. This means that whichever device this acronym is attached to uses digital, rather than analogue radio signals to communicate between the cordless phone and the base unit, providing greater clarity and security than the older, analogue based cordless phones. All new cordless phones use DECT to communicate between base and handset.
PMC Telecom sell a whole range of DECT phones – you can find them on our website, here on our Cordless Phones section.
