If you're looking for radios with more outdoor range, then licensing your own local frequency to use and purchasing relevant long range licensed radio is the next logical step up from the licence free (PMR) style radios. Licensing is easily obtainable by applying to Ofcom using the form (here). Two types of licensed radios are available – UHF and VHF. UHF are better suited for urban and wooded environments, whilst VHF are more suited for open areas to maximise range.
